TRANSMISSION

INFORMATION

This inspection applies to all vehicles.

METHOD OF INSPECTION

During this inspection, it is important that the vehicle is in neutral gear and the transmission brake (if fitted) released.

  1. Examine transmission.  In particular, check for:

    • Missing or loose flange bolts,
    • Cracked or insecure flanges,
    • Wear in shaft bearings,
    • Security of bearing housings,
    • Cracks or fractures in bearing housings,
    • Wear in universal joints,
    • Deterioration of flexible couplings,
    • Distorted, damaged or cracked shafts,
    • Deterioration of bearing housing flexible mountings,
    • Clearance between transmission shafts and adjacent components.
  1. Front Wheel Drive

For front wheel drive vehicles, check the drive shaft inner and outer universal joint couplings and constant velocity joints for:-

    • Wear and security,
    • Damage to flexible rubber or fabric universal couplings,
    • Security and oil contamination of flexing rubber or fabric universal couplings,
    • Condition, presence and security of constant velocity joint gaiters.

REASON FOR REJECTION

  2. A cracked or fractured bearing housing,       MAJOR
  3. Excessive wear in a universal joint,   MAJOR
  4. Serious deterioration of a transmission shaft flexible        MAJOR

coupling,

  2. Serious deterioration of a flexible mounting of a    MAJOR

bearing housing,

  1. Evidence of fouling between any transmission shaft MAJOR and an adjacent component.

2.

  1. A drive shaft constant velocity or universal joint     MAJOR

coupling excessively worn or insecure,

  1. A flexible rubber or fabric universal coupling unit MAJOR

damaged by severe cracking or breaking up,

  1. A flexible rubber or fabric universal coupling unit MAJOR

excessively softened by oil contamination, or insecure,

  1. A drive shaft constant velocity joint gaiter deteriorated      MINOR or insecurely mounted.
  2. A drive shaft constant velocity joint gaiter missing or         MAJOR split.
