MECHANICAL BRAKE COMPONENTS

INFORMATION

This inspection applies to all vehicles.

METHOD OF INSPECTION

                1.     Check the mechanical brake components for:

  1. Chafed rods or levers,
  2. Corroded, fray or knotted cables,

Note:

It is acceptable to fit cable expanders to reduce maladjustment.

  1. Condition of cable guides
  2. Free rotation of clevis joints between cables and levers (this includes cable linkages between brake pedals and remote mounted servos),
  3. Security of cables, rods, and clevis joints
  4. A corroded or damaged rod, lever or linkage.  Wear in eyes of relay levers, clevis joints, stationary pins or pivots,
  5. Abnormal movement of levers, indicating maladjustment or excessive wear,
  6. Security and excessive wear of brake linings/pads,
  7. Contamination of brake discs and drums by leaking brake fluid, oil grease,
  8. The condition and security of brake drums and discs,
  9. Presence and security of brake back plates/calipers,
  10. Restriction of free movement,
  11. Presence and security of locking devices.

Note:

On some vehicles, locking devices may not be obvious.  However, if there is evidence of disturbance or change, inform the vehicle presenter.

  1. Condition and operation of brake slack adjusters
  2. Any inappropriate repair or modification.

REASON FOR REJECTION

                                                                                                                      Deficiency Category

1.

  1. A brake rod or lever reduced in thickness by more             MAJOR

than 1/3rd,

  1. A brake cable corroded, knotted or with wires broken        MAJOR

so that it is weakened significantly,

  1. A brake cable guide defective            MAJOR

  1. Seizure of clevis joint pivots which causes strain or          MAJOR

wear to cables to an extent likely to lead to premature failure of the cable,

  1. A cable, rod or clevis joint insecure   MAJOR

  1. Serious weakening of any part due to excessive   MAJOR

wear, damage or corrosion,

  1. Abnormal movement of levers indicating     MAJOR

maladjustment or excessive wear,

  1. A brake lining or pad insecure or less than 1.5 mm           DANGEROUS

thick at any point,

  1. A brake disc or drum contaminated by brake fluid, oil        MAJOR

or grease,

  1. A brake disc or drum in such a condition that it is MAJOR

seriously weakened or insecure,

  1. A brake disc or drum cracked, or excessively scored,        MAJOR

pitted, worn, or brake contact area significantly reduced,

  1. A brake back plate, wheel cylinder or calliper          MAJOR

securing device loose, missing or excessively deteriorated,

  1. Restricted free movement of brake components,    MAJOR

  1. A locking device missing or insecure.           MAJOR

  • A brake slack adjuster obviously defective or          MAJOR

incorrectly installed

  1. A mechanical brake component inappropriately     MAJOR repaired or modified.
